Computer Survey -- 10/07/01

Paulinee (in her journal -- Inertia) posted a survey regarding the computer systems her readers were using. (She compared it to those "What's on your refrigerator door?" kinds of surveys.) Her survey questions are as follows:
  1. Desktop Wallpaper: What image and/or colour?
  2. Screen Saver: Describe, and if possible specify where you got it from.
  3. Colour scheme: default or otherwise?
  4. Sound scheme: what are your start-up and shut down wavs and any other distinctive sound prompts?
  5. Does all or some of the above come from a pre-set theme? If so, which?
  6. How many icons on your desktop?
  7. How many items in your recycle bin and what's the oldest "date deleted"?
  8. When was the last time your virus definitions were updated?

(Yes, you're right, she is Canadian.)

And here are my answers:

  1. Desktop Wallpaper: What image and/or colour? A photograph of the Mir space station in orbit sillhoueted against the earth. This has been on there pretty much all year. This is on my IBM ThinkPad 600E: Windows NT, 288 Mb RAM (that's two 128 Mb plus 32Mb on motherboard; next week I'll be replacing one of the 128's with a 256Mb chip and hope to replace the other a.s.a.p. 'cause I really do need half a gigabyte of memory to run some of the software I work with). Before Mir I had a variety of photographs -- me on a beach in Honolulu, me and Nancy in front of our old house in Binghamton, our daughter playing electric guitar, etc. (of course this begins to go back to a prior laptop, etc.)
  2. Screen Saver: Describe, and if possible specify where you got it from. A series of space photographs -- Armstrong on the moon, the Crab Nebula, Saturn's rings, etc. -- from someplace called webshots.com. (Throughout 1998 and 1999 I had a Y2K countdown screensaver.)
  3. Colour scheme: default or otherwise? Default
  4. Sound scheme: what are your start-up and shut down wavs and any other distinctive sound prompts? Default... although my kids sometimes have strange sounds on their machines.
  5. Does all or some of the above come from a pre-set theme? If so, which? Huh? No, I guess not.
  6. How many icons on your desktop? Twenty-two... but I only use a few of them, I'm far more likely to work from Start and Programs and WindowsNT Explorer... but right now I'm actually typing this on my son's desktop and he has fifty-nine icons on his desktop (background is somekind of a cartoon of a grunge rock group, this is on an IBM Aptiva, 128Mb RAM... my daughter tends to have anime stills on her desktop also an IBM Aptiva with 128Mb... my wife tends to have nice themes on hers, the oldest machine in regular use at our house, a 1996 vintage IBM Aptiva with 24Mb.)
  7. How many items in your recycle bin and what's the oldest "date deleted"? None -- I rarely accumulate stuff in there, empty it regularly. (On my son's machine there are two items, both deleted this afternoon.)
  8. When was the last time your virus definitions were updated? I update mine at least weekly. (My son's computer is also set to update virus definitions weekly.)

Those are my responses to the survey. You can check Paulinee's answers... and Bev Sykes has also answered the questions.
