A work in progress -- 12/23/08

This only my tenth entry for Holidailies -- Hoping to not miss any more...
(Just wander in from Holidailies? There's an introduction to the main characters down towards the bottom of the page... just scroll down.)

This is the next installment on our on-going home renovation project. The flooring installers arrived late Monday morning and set right to work.

Tiger has not been pleased. After years of running and hiding on a different floor of the house whenever someone starts running the vacuum cleaner, he has finally reached the point of acceptance (or just plain old age) where he will not run and hide as long as the vacuum monster does not come too close to the room he is in -- if it does, he will quickly exit the room.

Can you imagine how he has reacted to the sounds of large electric power saws and drills and hammering and banging?

That's right, he is hiding in the basement.

These guys brought a lot of big equipment with them. They have been making very good progress. This is Jeremy's room, the one with least amount of flooring installed yesterday. Jill's room has almost all of the new hardwood flooring down and the hallway is more than halfway done (although the quarter round moldings still have to be added in those areas). Just two guys are doing all this work. They probably put in five or six hours yesterday (they were finishing another job first thing yesterday). They got here today before eight and have been working right through. They didn't even take a coffee break yesterday and so far today they have been working more than four hours without stopping. They expect to be finished around four o'clock.

Then we could move furniture into the rooms and return the contents of the closets... which would mean the living room would once again be livable. (And our bedroom would no longer feel like an over-sized storage closet.)

And there might still be time to put up a Christmas tree before Christmas Day.

An introduction for those of you wandering in here from Holidailies for the first time: I'm just a middle-aged guy (but somehow I hit 65 on my last birthday) who lives in Rhode Island with my wife Nancy (a middle-school math teacher), daughter Gillian ("Jill" -- 26 yr old baker and part-time college student), son Jeremy (23 yr old restaurant cook and part-time college student), and Tiger (senior citizen cat). Eldest child Adam lives in New York City with his wife Leah and our grandsons Sam and Milo. I'm a programmer/systems analyst who got involved with software training and instructional design. I currently work from home doing quality assurance and editing on course material for both classroom courses and Web- based training courses for a very big computer company. I've been writing this online journal since 1996.
