Almost Groundhog Day -- 02/01/09

If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
(The last line of Percy Bysshe Shelley's Ode to the West Wind)

We have survived January's deep freeze, the snow, the single digit temperatures, more snow, not to mention ice pellots, sleet, and freezing rain.

But today was February 1st! January is over!

Tomorrow morning Punxsutawney Phil will either see his shadow or not.

And we will either have six more weeks of winter or spring will be just around the corner.

Of course when I lived in upstate New York we used to say "What? Only six more weeks of winter? Hurrah!" -- which was probably not the desired reaction. Heh! But to think that winter would be over by mid-March was a very pleasant thought.

Flipping the calendar page over to February just reminds me (despite this being the coldest January I can recall since we moved here to Rhode Island thirteen years ago (although that first winter we were here may have had more snow via "The Blizzard of '96") it remains true that Rhode Island winters are milder than ones I grew up with and shoveled my way through until we did move.

And today was bright and sunny and although the air may not exactly have been warm and balmy, the sunshine and lack of a cold wind made it seem milder than most days we've had in 2009 thus far and certainly made me feel that Spring can not be far behind...
