I ran -- and survived -- the annual BankNewport Pie Run 5 miler. (That's
a picture of this year's t-shirt.) Jill and I have been running this race
since 1995. (Jill won 2nd place Female 14 and under in '95 and came in
first place in that age group in '96.) The weather was the mildest that
I can recall for this race, upper 50's with light rain.
It was a family team effort this year. Jill and I were joined by Tom and
Paul (brothers-in-law) and Melissa (my niece). Melissa was the fastest
in our group and, yes, I was the slowest. It was fun having a family group
running. I'm hoping that next year two or three more might join us. |
(Note to newer readers: Nancy is one of ten children, so even though it
is rare for all of them to be able to travel to Rhode Island, it is not
difficult for the number in attendance at any family activity to be quite
large.) This is the third year in a row that we have rented the parish
hall at Nancy's church. The hall has two ovens and we usually figure on
two turkeys in the 20 to 22 pound range. I had trouble finding one in that
size range, so I opted for bigger -- 31 pounds. Fortunately the other turkey
was only around 18 pounds.
