On the road again --  04/29/06

No, not yet... but tomorrow morning (*yawn* -- early tomorrow morning) I've got to head up to the airport to catch a flight to Las Vegas.

Yeah, another technical conference.

We got out of having to go to the one in January. This is going to be a lot smaller than those January conferences (which had somewhere between sixteen and seventeen thousand attendees); I'd guess (based on one of these that I attended around three or four years ago) there will be around a thousand of us attending this conference.

I have two problems with it. First -- it's in Las Vegas. I've been to Las Vegas several times. It isn't my kind of city. (Why can't we have these things in real cities... like Boston or New York or Philadelphia or even Pittsburgh? Places that have attractions I'd find interesting, like museums.) Second -- it means not just flying, it means something like seven hours in an airplane. (Ah, but at least I got a direct flight on Southwest so I won't have to go through the hassle of changing planes in Cincinati or Cleveland or Detroit or wherever...) I've really come to hate flying, the cramped confines of economy class with not enough room between seats (and I always seem to get stuck behind some thoughtless jerk who tilts his seat all the way back as soon as we reach cruising altitude and leaves it like that for the entire flight), the long lines at airports, having to go through the moronic TSA screening process with the pretense that this bureaucratic stupidy actually does anything at all to make us any safer. (Locking the door to the cockpit was a good idea. Arming the flight crew would be a good follow-up to that but the mentality that guns are devices of evil seems to be preventing that from happening.)

And today is my birthday.

Old.

I don't feel any older today than I did yesterday. I'm tired because I didn't get enough sleep last night and busy because I've got a lot of stuff to get done today, but I don't feel any older.

I'm going to go for a run in a little while... maybe that will make me feel older. Heh!

I don't know if I will be doing any entries from Las Vegas or not. I'm not sure what kind of Internet connectivity I'll have out there... nor how much free time I might have. (Hmmm, and come to think of it, my laptop is not at all set up for this -- it has none of my files and none of the software I use...)

Of course sometimes I go a week without an entry even when I'm home so I don't suppose anyone would even especially notice if I were to go all week without posting an entry.
