Odds and ends -- 07/12/11

Odds and ends today, random scattered thoughts... Let's start with an obligatory sleeping cat on a hot (90 degrees F and pretty humid) summer day...

A few weeks ago when I signed up for a Y membership, I mentioned that the guy who took care of my orientation lesson in using the Nautilus equipment was an 85 year old motorcycle rider. I posted a photograph of his bike, but some of you thought that it was difficult to get a clear vision of his bike. You were right -- because of its bright white paint and the shape of its sidecar, that side shot was a bit confusing. When I went there for my workout yesterday I noticed Herb's bike in the parking lot so I snapped these pictures of his huge Honda motorcycle and sidecar. (Yeah, so when he and his wife went to California and back, she was sitting in the sidecar, not straddling the back of the bike behind him. And yes, I believe the top of the sidecar folds down just like the top of a convertible.)

I think as soon as I post this, I am going to head off to the Y for a run. I used the Nautilus equipment yesterday and that's something you do every other day so muscles get a day to recover. The first three weeks I only seemed to be able get there twice a week (although I also got in some running on a couple more days), but after doing Camire's four mile race on the 4th, I've managed to do my Nautilus circuit on the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th (yesterday). On the 6th I ran two miles around the neighborhood and then did half a mile on our treadmill; on the 8th Nancy and I dropped her car off in town to get new tires and then walked home on the bike path (only 2.87 miles, but it has a pretty good hill);and Sunday Jill and I went for a 3.5 mile run (although I walked about 100 feet up a hill that came just past the three mile point). Given the heat and humidity today, I think it would be much more enjoyable to work out on a treadmill or stair-stepper in a relatively cool room (well, cooler than 90). The key, though, at least for me, is to avoid skipping days because that leads to taking the next day off, etc.

And Nancy is off playing tennis (outside -- the nearest indoor tennis courts are in Warwick).

Okay, one more picture of that kid in the fur coat who hangs out at our house...
